FDA and AAP advise keeping infants under 6 months out of direct sun and in protective clothing rather than relying on sunscreen — infant skin absorbs more, relative to body weight, of anything applied to it. From 6 months, broad-spectrum SPF 30+ is appropriate; mineral filters (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide) are the usual pediatric recommendation because they sit on the skin rather than absorbing.
Infant skin is thinner and more permeable than adult skin, with a higher surface-area-to-weight ratio, so the same product delivers a proportionally larger dose. The American Academy of Pediatrics advises fragrance-free, dye-free products for routine infant care.
