How we reached this

'Gum base' in chewing gum is an opaque label term for synthetic polymers (polyisobutylene + waxes + plasticizers + softeners). FDA permits a fixed list of allowable polymers (21 CFR 172.615) but ingredient names are not required on the label. Lower rating reflects extreme opacity.
