Disclosure is voluntary here

Unlike food and cosmetics, US cleaning products are not required to disclose a full ingredient list. A short list can mean a simple formula — or an undisclosed one. Our score can only read what is disclosed.

Chemistry breakdown

Bar length = weight in the Cleaning formula · color = that component's score · tap a name to learn what it means.

Scored from 80% of the formula's weight. The rest doesn't apply to this product.

VOCs / respiratory4/10 · 35% weight

Volatile compounds that end up in the air you breathe while cleaning — the main exposure route for cleaning products.

Endocrine disruptors4/10 · 25% weight

Chemicals that can interfere with the body's hormone system — the signals that regulate growth, metabolism and reproduction. Exposure matters most during pregnancy and early childhood, which is why this component carries extra weight in baby products. Common examples under study: certain parabens, phthalates and bisphenols.

Aquatic / environmental4/10 · 20% weight

What happens after it goes down the drain — toxicity to aquatic life and how quickly it breaks down.

Ingredient disclosureno data · 10% weight

US law doesn't require cleaning products to list full ingredients. This measures how much the maker chooses to disclose.

Certificationsnone claimed · 10% weight

Independent third-party verifications (USDA Organic, FSC, EPA Safer Choice…). Informational only — having none never lowers a score; verified claims can raise it.

Reckitt Benckiser
Mead Johnson Enfamil NEC preterm infant litigation + Lysol 2020
  • 2016-05Oxy humidifier disinfectant deaths in South Korea — A humidifier disinfectant sold by Reckitt's South Korean subsidiary caused lung injury and death; official tallies attribute over a thousand deaths to humidifier disinfectants overall, with Oxy the largest single brand. A South Korean court convicted a former executive, and the company issued a public apology and compensation programme. Reporting and prosecution established that the company had commissioned and then withheld or misrepresented safety research. Recorded as intentional on the basis of that conduct — not on the sale of the product itself.
  • 2024-03Abbott/Reckitt preterm infant formula NEC verdicts — Juries returned verdicts against Reckitt's Mead Johnson unit over claims that cow's-milk-based preterm formula causes necrotising enterocolitis, including a $60 million verdict in Illinois in March 2024. The scientific position is contested: major paediatric bodies continue to support the products' use where donor milk is unavailable, and the FDA and NIH issued a joint statement noting the evidence does not establish causation. Recorded as disputed — there are adverse verdicts, and there is also unresolved scientific disagreement, and a fair dossier has to say both.
